Today marks the first day of your journey in Tibet, beginning with crossing the Nepal-Tibet border. After completing immigration and customs formalities, you will drive to Kyirong, a serene Tibetan border town nestled in the Himalayas. Surrounded by deep valleys and rugged hills, Kyirong offers breathtaking scenery and a peaceful environment to begin your altitude acclimatization.
Next, the group will travel a short distance toward Ghatte Khola, where Nepal Immigration officials will inspect luggage and documents. Continue to Rasuwagadhi, the border separating Nepal and Tibet, to complete final formalities before officially entering Tibet. Here, you will meet your experienced Tibetan guide who will accompany you on the sacred journey.
From Rasuwagadhi, drive along the expansive Tibetan Highway toward Kerung, enjoying the unique Himalayan landscapes. Upon arrival, take the day to rest and acclimatize; a relaxed day in Kerung helps prepare your body and mind for the upcoming trek toward Mount Kailash and Mansarovar.
Today is dedicated to rest and gentle walking around Kerung (Kyirong) to help your body adjust to the high-altitude Tibetan environment. This acclimatization day is important for a comfortable and safe journey ahead. Guests may relax at the hotel or enjoy easy, unhurried walks through the peaceful town.
One of the key highlights is a visit to Pakpa Monastery, located in the heart of Kerung. The monastery features a unique blend of Nepali-style architecture with traditional Tibetan design, reflecting the long-standing cultural connection between Nepal and Tibet. Inside, you will see the impressive statue of Princess Bhrikuti, the Nepali princess who played a significant role in introducing Buddhism to Tibet during the reign of King Songtsen Gampo.
In addition to cultural exploration, visitors can admire the surrounding gorges and mountain scenery, stroll through local streets, and experience authentic Tibetan and Nepali cuisines at nearby eateries. The day is relaxed and flexible, allowing you to acclimatize while enjoying the natural beauty and cultural richness of Kerung.
Continuing your journey deeper into Tibet, you will travel from Kyirong to Saga, a small yet significant town in the Tibetan Autonomous Region. This overland drive offers a remarkable transition through vast desert landscapes, rugged rocky terrain, and tranquil Tibetan villages, showcasing the raw beauty of the Tibetan plateau.
Saga serves as an important altitude acclimatization stop, allowing travelers to rest and prepare for the higher elevations ahead. Upon arrival, the evening is free to relax, explore the local Tibetan market, or rest at the hotel to conserve energy for the upcoming days.
As the journey unfolds, the route crosses two impressive mountain passes-Thong La Pass (5,153 m) and Lalung La Pass (5,030 m). Along the way, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of Mount Shishapangma (8,027 m) and Mount Gaurishankar (7,181 m) rising majestically against the Himalayan skyline.
Descending from the high passes, the drive continues through scenic areas such as Khunmen Tso, Sinling, and Karru Ongchen, before reaching the beautiful Peiku Tso (Peiku Lake). On the green shores of the lake, there is a chance to spot wild Tibetan donkeys (Kiang) roaming freely in their natural habitat.
Nearby, the sacred Milarepa Cave offers a meaningful spiritual stop, while the legendary Brahmaputra River (Yarlung Tsangpo) flows gracefully alongside the route. Crossing a wide concrete bridge over this iconic river, the journey finally brings you to Saga.
A good night’s rest, proper hydration, and a relaxed pace are essential at this stage to ensure smooth acclimatization and a comfortable continuation of your Tibetan adventure.
Today, your journey continues toward the sacred Lake Manasarovar, one of the most revered spiritual sites for both Hindus and Buddhists. Upon arrival, pilgrims have the opportunity to perform the Manasarovar Parikrama-a circumambulation around the holy lake-which is believed to purify the soul and bring spiritual blessings. Surrounded by majestic snow-capped peaks, the serene beauty of the lake offers a truly divine and unforgettable experience.
Departing from Saga, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra drives through the scenic Tibetan plateau, following the Brahmaputra River toward the tranquil shepherd town of Old Dzongba. Along the way, you will pass the colorful Dargyeling Monastery, a vibrant center of Tibetan culture and spirituality, before reaching Paryang. Here, the calm waters of the Horchu River accompany you as you move toward a Tibetan military checkpost for verification.
After completing the formalities, the journey ascends to the Mayum La Pass (5,211 m). From this vantage point, the stunning Gurla Mandhata Peak (7,694 m) dominates the skyline, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayas. A scenic, two-hour descent along the Tibetan road finally brings you to Lake Manasarovar, with the sacred Mount Kailash standing tall in the distance, often referred to as the “spine of the universe.”
The day concludes with an evening of spiritual reflection beside the tranquil waters of Lake Manasarovar, a truly soulful experience that will stay with you long after your journey.
Begin your day with a holy bath in Lake Manasarovar, a spiritually sacred act believed to purify the body, mind, and soul. Though direct immersion in the lake is restricted, pilgrims collect its water for bathing, honoring centuries-old traditions. Following the bath, participate in Pooja (prayer ceremony) and Havan (sacred fire ritual) by the lake’s serene shores, seeking health, peace, and spiritual fulfillment for yourself and your ancestors.
After the lakeside rituals, you will embark on a scenic 45-minute drive to Darchen (4,670 m, 40 km), the gateway and base camp for the Mount Kailash pilgrimage. Darchen offers comfortable accommodations, and we have arranged your stay at the Himalayan Hotel, providing a restful environment to prepare for the upcoming trek around Mount Kailash.
Along the way, take in the majestic views of Chiu Gompa, Gurla Mandhata Peak, and the surrounding Himalayas, a visual treat that enriches the spiritual experience. For those interested, an optional visit to Chiu Gompa is available (entrance fee payable on-site), or you can explore the lake’s surroundings via jeep or bus.
In Darchen, your guide will provide detailed information about the Outer Kailash Parikrama, a 53 km circuit around Mount Kailash. Pilgrims may choose to complete this route on foot, or with the assistance of horses or yaks, which can be arranged locally with the guide (payment on-site). This day blends rituals, scenic travel, and preparation for one of the most spiritually significant journeys of your lifetime.
After breakfast, the Kailash Parikrama officially begins with a short drive from Darchen to Tarboche (4,724 m), a sacred site marked by the annually renewed prayer flagpole. Tarboche, also known as Yamadwar, is considered the spiritual gate of Mount Kailash, guarded by Yama, the God of Death in Hindu tradition. Pilgrims believe that only virtuous souls may pass through this gateway, making it a site of profound reverence.
From Tarboche, the journey continues on foot or with horses and yaks, ascending gently through the Valley of Lhachu. The trek to Dirapuk offers awe-inspiring views of Mount Kailash, including occasional glimpses of its west face if the weather permits. Along the way, you may pass the ancient sky cremation grounds of Tibet, a striking cultural and spiritual landmark.
Dirapuk, located at the north face of Mount Kailash, is a key pilgrimage stop. Accommodation here is basic, often in shared hostel-style rooms with 4-5 beds, though warm tents are arranged by the team when required. Pilgrims can spend the evening reflecting on the sacred surroundings and marveling at the majestic north face of Kailash.
This first day of the outer Kailash Parikrama is gentle and steady, allowing pilgrims to acclimatize while immersing themselves in the spiritual energy of the region.
The second day of the Kailash Parikrama is considered the most physically demanding yet spiritually rewarding part of the pilgrimage. Pilgrims rise early to begin the trek over the Dolma La Pass (5,630 m), the highest point of the Kailash circuit and a place of deep spiritual significance. The Dolma La, also known as Green Tara Pass, is revered as the dwelling of Goddess Tara, and crossing it symbolizes courage, devotion, and renewal.
The ascent spans approximately 8 km along a glacial trail, followed by a 5 km steep descent and a final 22 km relatively flat hike to Zutulpuk Monastery (4,790 m). Along the way, pilgrims pass Jarok Donkhang and the Shiva Tsal cemetery (5,330 m), where travelers leave behind worn items-such as old cloth, jewelry, or symbolic offerings-signifying a fresh start and spiritual cleansing.
As you approach the summit, the prayer flags fluttering in the winds signal that the Dolma La Pass is near. During the descent, pilgrims encounter the Gauri Kunda (Tuksche Tso) at 5,608 m, a sacred glacial lake where collecting water for rituals is customary, though bathing is discouraged due to extreme cold. The trail also passes the Axe of Karma, a symbolic landmark where pilgrims release past sins and dedicate themselves to virtuous deeds.
The day concludes at Zutulpuk, where modest hostel-style accommodations provide a comforting and restful environment after the strenuous journey. After completing this segment, pilgrims are rewarded with the profound sense of having circumambulated Mount Kailash, one of the greatest spiritual achievements in the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
On the final day of the Kailash Parikrama, pilgrims enjoy a leisurely trek along an easy trail, completing the outer circumambulation of Mount Kailash. In about two hours, the trail leads back to Darchen via Barkha Plain, marking the spiritual culmination of the pilgrimage.
After lunch, the journey continues by road as you return to the comfort of Saga, passing through Lake Manasarovar, Mayum La Pass, and Paryang. This scenic drive offers one last opportunity to soak in the majestic Himalayan landscapes and reflect on the profound spiritual experience of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra.
On the final leg of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, we drive back from Saga to Kerung, a journey of approximately 4-5 hours, retracing the scenic route along the Tibetan plateau. Along the way, you will pass Peiku Tso, as well as Lalung La and Thong La Passes, offering stunning Himalayan vistas one last time.
Upon arrival in Kerung, the journey concludes with a cultural farewell dinner alongside your Tibetan team, celebrating the completion of this spiritually transformative pilgrimage. This marks the end of a remarkable journey through Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar, and the sacred landscapes of Tibet, leaving pilgrims with lifelong memories.
The final leg of the journey takes us from Kerung back to Kathmandu, covering approximately 412 km in 8-9 hours. After crossing Rasuwagadhi, our Nepali team warmly welcomes us back, marking a joyful return from the sacred landscapes of Tibet.
The scenic drive passes through Syabrubesi, Dhunche, Rani Pauwa, and Trishuli, offering a last glimpse of the Himalayan foothills. Arriving in Kathmandu, pilgrims conclude their Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, carrying with them unforgettable spiritual experiences and memories of one of the most revered pilgrimages in the world.
