Start & End Point
Kathmandu to KathmanduThe Champadevi Day Hike is one of Kathmandu’s most loved one-day adventures, offering a refreshing break from the city into quiet forests, panoramic Himalayan views, and the spiritual energy of the southern valley hills. Located only 16 km from Kathmandu, Champadevi Hill rises to 2,285 meters and features an easy-to-moderate trail suitable for beginners, families, and anyone wanting a peaceful outdoor experience without traveling far.
Kathmandu Valley is often described as a living museum, filled with centuries-old temples, stupas, monasteries, and traditional arts. Outside the busy streets, the valley is surrounded by green hills that make excellent hiking destinations. Among these, Champadevi stands out for its wide mountain views, clean forest trails, cultural importance, and accessibility. The peak offers breathtaking panoramas of Kathmandu Valley, Pharping village, rolling hills, and the Himalayan range stretching from Manaslu to Gaurishankar-and even Everest on exceptionally clear days.
After reaching the summit and exploring the sacred Champadevi Temple and Buddhist stupa, hikers can relax with lunch, enjoy peaceful mountain scenery, and descend either back to the starting point or follow a scenic trail toward Taudaha Lake. Spring and autumn are the best seasons for this hike, offering clear skies and perfect temperature, while winter provides crisp mountain visibility with fewer crowds.
Perfect for solo travelers, families, couples, and nature lovers, the Champadevi Day Hike blends natural beauty, cultural heritage, and a gentle adventure-making it one of the top day hikes from Kathmandu.
The Pharping or Bhanjyang route is the most popular and beginner-friendly way to reach Champadevi. This trail begins near the sacred Dakshinkali Temple, a major Hindu pilgrimage site, and gently climbs through peaceful pine forests filled with birdsong and fresh mountain air. The path is well-marked and wide, making it ideal for families, first-time hikers, and travelers wanting a relaxed nature walk.
Along the way, you’ll pass small shrines, prayer flags, and viewpoints overlooking Pharping village and Kathmandu Valley. The climb to the summit usually takes 2.5–3 hours, offering plenty of rest spots and natural viewpoints. This route is perfect for anyone looking for a cultural, spiritual, and scenic day hike without steep or challenging sections.
The Machhegaun route begins from a small township in Kirtipur and is best suited for hikers who prefer a more challenging ascent. From Thamel, it takes about 45 minutes to reach the starting point. The trail climbs directly up the hillside, making it steeper but faster—about 3 hours from Machhegaun to the top.
This route has no teahouses or shops, so hikers must carry water, snacks, and lunch before starting. The forest is quieter and less crowded compared to the Pharping route, offering a more immersive wilderness experience. Once at the summit, hikers can return the same way or continue toward Pharping to complete a scenic loop. This route is perfect for strong walkers or those who want a quicker yet fulfilling hike.
The Chandragiri to Champadevi route is the most adventurous and rewarding option. Starting from Chandragiri Hill near the cable car station, this trail takes around 5 hours to reach Champadevi and includes several ups and downs along forested ridgelines.
The best part about this route is the 360-degree Himalayan views, passing through one of the most scenic ridge walks in Kathmandu Valley. Trekkers will find a small teahouse halfway, usually serving Nepali Dal Bhat, making it a convenient rest point.
This trail is excellent for hikers seeking a full-day adventure with diverse terrain, untouched forests, sweeping landscapes, and the thrill of walking between two iconic hilltops. After exploring Champadevi, hikers can descend to Pharping or take the scenic route toward Taudaha Lake.
