Responsible Tourism with Dream Paradise: Protecting Nepal’s Future, Enhancing Your Journey
At Dream Paradise Tours and Treks, we believe that the breathtaking beauty and rich culture of Nepal are precious gifts, both for our travelers and for the local communities. We are deeply committed to responsible tourism, ensuring that every adventure we craft leaves a positive impact, minimizes harm, and contributes to a sustainable future for this incredible country. Our ethos is simple: “Leave only footprints, take only photographs, and leave a positive impact.”
Our Commitment to Sustainable Practices:
- Eco-Friendly Operations: As an ecologically responsible trekking and tour company, we operate all treks and tours in government-designated areas, utilizing recommended campsites and resting places to minimize our environmental footprint. We strictly avoid the use of firewood for cooking on our journeys, actively preventing deforestation. Our policy is to carry all litter with us from the trails and dispose of it properly in designated areas, ensuring the pristine beauty of the landscapes is maintained for future generations.
- Supporting Local Economies: We prioritize homestay trekking and utilize accommodations in locally owned lodges and hotels wherever available. This direct support ensures that economic benefits from tourism flow directly to the communities in these regions, fostering local livelihoods and sustainable development. Tourism in Nepal contributes significantly to the national economy, accounting for approximately 4% of GDP and 15% of total foreign exchange earnings, making it a major source of income for thousands of Nepalese people. We are dedicated to ensuring this vital economic benefit reaches those who need it most in remote areas.
- Ethical Employment & Porter Welfare: Our commitment extends to the well-being of our entire team. We are dedicated to the fair and ethical treatment of our local guides and porters. We ensure they are well-trained, professionally equipped, and paid fairly and that our company policy strictly adheres to a maximum load of 20 kg per porter, safeguarding their health and dignity. We actively work against exploitative practices like porter abandonment or over-burdening, which have unfortunately occurred in the past within the industry.
Cultivating Cultural Respect & Authentic Engagement:
Nepal’s traditional culture is one of the very reasons why tourists visit, and we are dedicated to its preservation and respectful interaction. We encourage all travelers to be mindful and respectful of local customs.
- Respectful Greetings & Dress: Simple gestures like greeting locals with a warm “Namaste” are greatly appreciated. As Nepal is a conservative country, we advise women to have their legs and shoulders covered and men to wear full-length trousers and tops with long sleeves.
- Mindful Body Language: The forehead is considered the most sacred part of the body; it’s impolite to touch an adult Nepali’s head. Avoid stretching your legs in public or pointing your feet at anyone, as feet are considered the lowest and dirtiest part of the body. Public displays of affection are generally frowned upon.
- Engaging Respectfully at Sacred Sites: When visiting ancient sites, temples, or monasteries, remove your shoes before entering. Always walk in a clockwise direction around monuments and temples (keeping the monument on your right), and avoid touching any religious objects. Photos inside temples are generally not permitted unless you’ve explicitly asked permission. Respect specific prayer times or rules if entry is restricted. A small donation to a temple, though never asked for, is always appreciated and supports its daily operations.
- Thoughtful Interactions & Gifting: We encourage you to engage with locals respectfully and buy local handicrafts directly from villagers to support their skills and economy. Please do not give money, pens, or sweets to children you encounter, as this can encourage begging and create unhealthy dependencies. Instead, choose to support community projects or donate through reputable charities, which we proudly support in their educational and rebuilding projects.
- Food & Etiquette: If eating with your hands, use your right hand only. Avoid touching food to your lips if sharing, and don’t eat from someone else’s plate. If invited into a private home for a meal, accept gracefully; take less than you can eat, as asking for seconds is a high compliment.
Protecting Wildlife & Environment:
- Leave No Trace: Beyond just packing out your own litter, we ask you to be conscious of waste. Avoid accepting plastic bags, buy additional food from local markets to reduce packaging, and take particularly harmful waste (like batteries) back to Kathmandu for proper disposal. Do not feed wild animals, pick flowers, or touch or move fossils.
- Animal Welfare: We strongly discourage any interaction with wild animals that alters their natural behavior. We do not support animal tourism practices such as elephant safaris for viewing wildlife (preferring less intrusive methods), elephant polo, or the use of performing animals like snake charmers or soothsayers’ parrots. If you see working animals (like yaks or donkeys) being maltreated or overloaded, please do not participate; instead, support owners who treat their animals well and consider reporting any concerns to relevant animal welfare organizations.
- Forest Preservation: While firewood use is traditional, we actively avoid it on our treks. We also support initiatives that promote efficient stoves (like the “Rocket Stove”) to reduce reliance on newly chopped wood and improve indoor air quality for local households. We encourage supporting reforestation efforts through reputable organizations.
Our Pledge to the Community & Environment: Dream Paradise is more than just a tour operator; it’s a social enterprise deeply integrated with the communities we serve. We believe that responsible, well-managed tourism is one of the most central ways of lifting rural Nepalese out of poverty and supporting vital development. A significant percentage of our total profits is dedicated to social work within local communities, including supporting education, orphanages, elderly care homes, and underprivileged groups. We have personally experienced the challenges of remote Nepal, making this commitment deeply ingrained in our values.
By choosing Dream Paradise, you’re not just booking a trip; you’re becoming a part of a movement. You’re supporting a company that is fully registered and licensed by the government of Nepal, adheres to the highest ethical standards, and is deeply committed to creating a positive, lasting impact for both travelers and the people of Nepal.
